IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)

An IFTA license is a license issued by the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) which allows commercial vehicles to operate and travel within participating jurisdictions.

IFTA is an agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces to simplify fuel tax reporting for motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. Under IFTA, a carrier only needs to file one fuel tax report, instead of having to file separate fuel tax reports in each jurisdiction they operate.

Motor carriers operating in the commercial transportation industry that travel across state or provincial lines and use qualified motor vehicles are required to have an IFTA license. A qualified motor vehicle is defined as one that has two axles and a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, or has three or more axles regardless of weight, or is used in combination and the weight exceeds 26,000 pounds.

By having an IFTA license, carriers can avoid the hassle of having to obtain fuel permits and file multiple fuel tax returns in each jurisdiction they operate. They can simply pay the appropriate fuel taxes owed based on the miles traveled in each jurisdiction and the fuel consumed.
